3rd Annual End of Summer Hay Challenge at TUF

The Urban Farm Hay Challenge

The Urban Farm Hay Challenge 2011

Thankfully, this hot summer is quickly drawing to an end.  From a farming perspective, that signifies that harvest is eminent.  This is the time of the year where hay is most plentiful, and can be purchased at the best price.   Thus, we are launching our 3nd annual “hay challenge” at The Urban Farm.

The hay challenge works this way:  someone or some entity contributes a sum of money to be used for hay for the animals and challenges others to match the challenge.  For example, ABC company donates $500 to the hay challenge and issues a challenge to their employees or their sub-contractors to match the challenge within 48 hours. Or, a family can put up a challenge donation, of say, $100 and send out challenges to family members and friends to double the amount by the end of the week.  It is a great way to get lots of new people interested in TUF. Your personal story helps to increase the donations.  All the proceeds go to purchase hay for TUF animals this fall.  Last year we raised over $7,000!

Timing is everything — because Fall is the best time to get hay for $5 per bale.  The rancher we work with will sell us as much hay as we can buy for the $5 price. By winter, the cost of hay zooms to almost $10 per bale of hay.  The more hay we can put into our barn this fall, the less hay we have to buy when the price goes up.

Hope you will help us meet the hay challenge.  Start the ball rolling today by making a donation and then issuing the challenge to some group of people or organizations that you think will match it.  Forward any challenges that you send out to info@theurbanfarm.org so that we can keep a running tab on the challenges.

As always you can send checks or donate via the Paypal button on our website (www.theurbanfarm.org).  Of course, you can always designate your donation be used a different way.

2011 Workshops for Young Children

I Want To Be A Farmer Summer Workshop

Does your child relish wearing overalls and getting dirty.  Do they love animals and are mesmerized by growing things? Does the sight of a tractor send him or her into a state of sheer delight?  Then you will want to sign up immediately for this workshop.  Kids spend a week learning about farm animals and growing tasty and healthy things to eat.  Farm kids will enjoy a hands-on experience that incorporates the work of the farm with learning about the many contributions that livestock make to our everyday lives – from what we eat to what we wear.  Participants will learn first-hand about sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, horses, donkeys, and pigs.  The Farm’s learning gardens will provide children with ample opportunity to get dirty and wet while tending the fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

7 – 10 year olds         9:00 – noon  Monday thru Friday      Cost – $175 per session       WBF-1:   June 27 – July 1

Storybook Farm Summer Workshop

A farm experience designed especially for young children between the ages of four and six, Storybook Farm introduces youngsters to the excitement of farm animals and plants through engaging books.  Each morning begins with a story – Going To A Horse Farm, Hedgie’s Surprise, Three Billy Goats Gruff, etc.  From there, the children proceed to the farmyard where literature is transformed into real life.  For example, having read about children visiting a horse farm, participants will actually groom miniature horses and maybe give them a bubble bath, go for a horse ride on a big horse, wield a muck rake, feed the horses, and climb on the hay bales.  Guaranteed to be a delightful way for young children to learn about farming.

4 – 6 year olds         9:00 – noon  Monday thru Friday      Cost — $175 per session       SBF-1:   June 27 – July 1

All participants in summer workshops are required to be members of The Urban Farm.  Family memberships are $45 per year (membership year is January 1 – December 31.

General 4-H Meeting at TUF 12/09/10

General 4-H meeting at The Urban Farm:

Thursday. December 9th from 5:45 to 7:00 pm

Dear 4-H Members and Parents,

On behalf of The Urban Farm (TUF) 4-H club, it is our pleasure to invite you to a winter gathering with acquaintances, fuzzy, hairy, and somewhat in between — The TUF 4-H Winter Holiday Celebration.

This event shall take place at our next general 4-H meeting at the farm on Thursday. December 9th from 5:45 to 7:00 pm at the regular meeting place inside the building. There will be game and activities; little yummies and gummies for the grumbling little tummies; winter stories for the Cloverbuds; and important town cryin’ announcements for the upcoming year.

This event is also a dessert potluck and we’ll need you to keep our bellies from a- rumbling. Please bring anything from gingersnap cookies to pumpkin pie and anything in between.   We will provide hot chocolate and apple cider.  It would be ever so nice if you would provide utensils and containers for your food, for our kitchen supplies are not well stocked.  We also welcome your great ideas for fun, festive games and good seasonal jolliness.

Whatever the reason, it is going to be a great winter season, so plan to help us welcome it in with your presence at this winter holiday event.

Warm regards in this cold holiday season!,

Alexis Haynes,    Emma Gale,            Malia Mangham
(President)         (Vice President)       (Vice President)

NEWS: Nov. 2010: The Urban Farm

TUF 4-H

Looking for something fun and educational to do with your kids?  Then 4-H is just the ticket.  Every Thursday evening from 5:30 – 6:45 pm through November, TUF is holding informational sessions for parents and kids to learn about the 4-H projects available at The Urban Farm.  Last week we spent an uproariously funny hour teaching lambs to walk on a leash!!!!  What a rodeo that was!  Join us for one or more of the sessions and find out about the many advantages to being a 4-H member at TUF.  Following is the schedule:

Nov. 4   Cloverbuds ( children 5 – 7 years old)
Nov.11   Non-livestock projects (e.g. shooting sports, gardening, photography, etc.)
Nov. 18  Large Livestock – Cows, pigs, horses
Dec. 2    Veterinary Science

TUF 4-H General Meeting

The November general 4-H meeting will be this Thursday (November 4) from 5:45 til 7:00 pm  Officer elections will be held.  All Farm participants are encouraged to participate in 4-H.  Plan to join us.  The Cloverbud informational session will be held at the same time.

In The Dark

We are literally in the dark – in our indoor arena.  Almost half of the huge lights in the indoor arena have burned out and we are teaching our evening Embracing Horses classes in a twilight setting. The replacement costs of each bulb is $258.  We need 12.  We have found a distributor who will sell us each light for $159.  Would you be willing to sponsor one big light bulb for the indoor arena?  If so, please send a check to The Urban Farm and make a notation in the memo line that you are sponsoring a light bulb.

Embracing Horses Winter/Spring Registration

Earlybird Registration forms will be sent out this week to all currently enrolled riders in Embracing Horses.  Forms and payment must be received no later than November 15 to ensure guaranteed enrollment and get the 12% earlybird discount.  Space is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

TUF Fundraising Committee Update

We still need to raise $40,000 by the end of 2010. Thanks to Kim Downing for facilitating the TUF Fundraising Committee.  Four subcommittees have been formed and your energy and expertise is needed on one of these committees.  Please contact Kim at kmangham@bigplanet.com to get more details as to how to be involved in helping TUF raise money to continue our programs.  The subcommittees are:

  1. Small grant writing: This is something you can do from your own computer, on your own time.  It takes about 5-6 hours to complete and yields between $1,000 – $5,000.00.   We have the information you need to get started.
  2. Large Grant writing: This takes 15-20 hours to write but the pay-offs are larger—anywhere from $5,000 – $30,000.00 (or more) These run about 4-8 pages long with 10-20 attachments.   Time is spent researching foundations and grants, and fine-tuning the grant application to fit the specifics of the organization we are requesting funds from.  A grant template has been developed.
  3. Event planning: Several events – small and large – are planned.  These are projected to bring in from $7,000 to $15,000.
  4. Sales of TUF Products: This can be anything from pony rides to birthday parties, garden plots, horse shows  and rental space.

Congratulations

Emma Gale, Alexis Haynes, and Malia Mangham had a great showing at last week’s Hunter/Jumper show at Hobby Horse Farm.  Three first place ribbons for Alexis and Doc, two seconds and a fifth for Emma and Gatan, and a first place ribbon for Malia and Bugsy.  Unfortunately, Bugsy stepped on Malia’s foot doing a bit of damage and resulting in her having to scratch from the remaining classes.

ANNUAL HAY CHALLENGE — A $3000 challenge has been committed to buy hay for animals at TUF. The challenge is to match this sum within two weeks.  For the better part of 2010 we were paying $10.50 per bale of hay.  We have been working with a farmer who has agreed to sell an entire hay field to us for $5.00 per bale.  A $100 donation buys 20 bales of hay– enough to feed all the TUF animals for one day.  Join the hay challenge today.  Send a check or make a donation through Paypal (go to www.theurbanfarm.org).  As of today, we have received $940 toward the hay challenge.  We need $2060 more to meet the challenge!

4-H@TUF — Kids from the Urban Farm just finished Adams County Fair last week.  As in past years, we will take a break from 4H meetings for the remainder of the month of August.  The next 4H meeting will be September 9 from 5:45 – 7:00 pm.  This will be an end of the year meeting mostly focused on wrapping up Fair.  The first meeting of the new 4H year will be October 7 from 5:45 – 7:00 pm. :: Click here to view the 4-H Meeting Calendar

MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH TUF — There are so many ways
to make a difference in kid’s lives.  Volunteering at The Urban Farm is one of those ways.  We are looking for volunteers to fill specific jobs/roles at TUF this Fall.  Do any of these jobs appeal to you?  If so contact donna@theurbanfarm.org to discuss your interests.

4-H LEADERS — We need adult leaders for goats, sheep, poultry, dogs, and gardening.  The new 4-H year starts in October.  You don’t have to be an expert in any of the areas, just be willing to learn and to help kids with their projects and record books. Contact donna@theurbanfarm.org to discuss your interests.

EMBRACING HORSES CLASS ASSISTANTS — Our beginning-level riding classes need adults to help out. Classes meet after school for two hours and volunteers work hands-on with children and horses.  We need volunteers on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday.  Volunteers are asked to commit to one specific evening class per week for a whole 12 week session. Contact donna@theurbanfarm.org to discuss your interests.

OFFICE ASSISTANT — If you spend anytime at TUF you know that we are organizationally challenged at times.  We are sure that someone breaks in at night and adds more pieces of paper to the overflowing “to be filed” boxes.  Joking aside, we could really use some extremely well organized individual to help around the office. Some data entry would be nice too. Contact donna@theurbanfarm.org to discuss your interests.

SATURDAY MORNING ACTIVITY COORDINATOR — Saturday mornings at TUF are chaotic to say the least.  There may be as many as 100 people on The Farm on a slow day!  Classes are going, visitors are dropping by for tours, work days are ensuing, birthday parties are happening, etc, etc, etc.  A patient, outgoing person is needed to help keep the flow of activity going, make sure waivers are signed, collect donations and fees, and send people to the right place. Contact donna@theurbanfarm.org to discuss your interests.

TUF WISH LIST — This is our wish/need list for Fall.  Let Donna or Rick know if you have or know of someone who has and will donate any of these items.

  • Perennials (herbs, ornamental, fruit, vines) and spring bulbs.
  • 1 ton or ¾ ton newer model, road-worthy pick-up truck with no more than 150,000 miles on it (must have a towing package and class 4 hitch).  Children and animals will be passengers in this vehicle.
  • Larger tractor with implements (eg. bucket, snow plow, rototiller, mower, harrow, etc).
  • Sheets of plywood to repair animal shelters.  Need 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch plywood.  No particle board please.

THE URBAN FARM ANNUAL END OF SUMMER HAY CHALLENGE

Springtime at The Urban Farm at Stapleton

Unbelievably, summer is quickly drawing to end.  From a farming perspective, that signifies that harvest is eminent.  This is the time of the year where hay is most plentiful, and can be purchased at the best price.   Thus, we are launching our 2nd annual “hay challenge” at The Urban Farm.

The hay challenge works this way: someone or some entity contributes a sum of money to be used for hay for the animals and challenges others to match some portion of the challenge.  A $3,000 challenge has been committed and so the fun begins.  The challenge is to match this sum within two weeks.

For the better part of 2010 we were paying $10.50 per bale of hay.  We have been working with a farmer in the Longmont area who has agreed to sell us an entire hay field to us for $5.00 per bale.  Do the math–this is less than half of what we paid last year.  The bales weigh about 75 pounds each and are high quality organically-grown hay.  A $100 donation buys 20 bales of hay – enough to feed all the TUF animals for one day.

Hope you will help us meet the challenge.  As always you can send checks or donate via Paypal:

And, of course, you can always designate your donation be used a different way.

Thank you very much for your support!

Bake Sale at The Urban Farm

The Urban Farm Bake Sale

TUF Kids, Parents, Friends of The Farm:

This Saturday, May 1st the TUF 4H club will be having their annual bake sale during Mulch Pickup.  The kids have asked that everyone provide homemade baked goods.  Last year they made almost $400 in about 3 hours. They could have made more but they ran out of baked goods.  All the funds are used to help pay the costs of participating in county fair in August.

The kids are requesting your help in preparing homemade goodies.  All items must be individually wrapped in plastic wrap or in a ziplock type baggie.

Please drop off your goodies by 6:00 pm tomorrow (Friday) or at the latest — 7:00 am on Saturday morning.  The Bake Sale starts at 7:30.

Kids and parents are needed to help with this event. Donations of coffee are appreciated as well.

Thank you on the kids behalf.

NEWS: APR 2010 AT THE URBAN FARM

The Urban Farm - Embracing Horses Program for Youth Horseback Riding

The Urban Farm gets a facelift. TUF held a spring cleanup weekend on April 10 and 11th.  More than 130 volunteers showed up to clean, reorganize, and spruce up The Farm.  Rocky Mountain Excavation donated a full day of road grading and crowning to address water runoff and pot hole issues.  The new look from Sand Creek Trail is astonishing!  Thank you to all those who helped make a difference.

Chipoltle holds fundraiser for TUF and Feed Denver. April 11th, friends and neighbors converged on Chipoltle in Stapleton for a delicious time of good food and lively conversation.  The restaurant donated half of the receipts from the evening to TUF and Feed Denver.  Well over a hundred people enjoyed the concept – eat dinner and help The Farm at the same time. Thanks Chipoltle.

28 school days till summer break! It’s not too late to sign up for summer workshops at The Urban Farm. TUF still has some morning workshop and evening class availability for children and youth ages 4 – 18 years. Offerings include Embracing Horses classes, Storybook Farm and I Want To Be A Farmer workshops.  Contact info@theurbanfarm.org or 303-307-9332 for more information.

Adults can take classes too! Adult riding classes are available.  Feed Denver is launching a series of classes on Urban Agriculture – class offerings include Culinary Herbs as Healing Herbs, Keeping Chickens in the City, Introduction to Permaculture, Fiber Arts, and others.  Online registration can be completed at www.FeedDenver.com.

Youth Corps teaches sustainable food production. — Recently, four youth were selected by Feed Denver at The Urban Farm to participate as part of a national Youth Corps to teach other kids about sustainable food production.  The kids have spent several months learning the Growing Power model being replicated at TUF (ie growing soil, vermicomposting, year round food production, aquaponics, etc) and are now going to other cities around the country helping schools and youth groups establish their own projects.  Over spring break the kids and TUF staff travelled to New Orleans to help establish an aquaponics project in the 9th ward.

Free Farm tours for Stapleton friends and neighbors. May 8th between 9:00 and noon, Stapleton residents are invited to come over to The Farm for a free tour.  TUF Kids and adult volunteers will show people around the Farm – introducing them to the animals (we may have new lambs by then) and showing them around the gardens.

Summer Farm Market.  On May 8th we will also launch a summer “farm market” which will be held each Saturday morning from 9:00 am till noon.  Fresh greens, fresh eggs, and other delectables will be available for purchase.  Pony rides for $5.00 will be available during the market.

Summer Workshops for Young Children

Only 38 more days of school till summer!  It’s not too late to sign up for summer workshops at The Urban Farm.

Summer Program for Young Children at The Urban Farm

Summer Program for Young Children at The Urban Farm

Wondering what your kids can do all summer at The Urban Farm?   Children and youth can ride horses and learn how to care for them.  They can enjoy the experience of feeling freshly tilled earth or sitting on a log watching a couple of baby goats suckle from their momma then bounce away chasing imaginary butterflies.  They can sit under the shade of a tree and learn how to knit from a ball of yarn that they spun themselves.  Or, they can wander through the garden picking their own vegetables to eat for snack.  There is sleeping out under the stars after cooking hotdogs over a fire and experiencing that quivery feeling in the pit of their tummies from telling slightly scary stories and then hearing coyotes howl in the distance. They might give a miniature horse a bubble bath and learn how to make old-fashioned strawberry jam.

Sound like fun?  Then open the attachments and register your child in one or more summer activities today.  Space is very limited and registrations with payments are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Embracing Horses Riding Program

Embracing Horses at The Urban Farm at Stapleton

The Urban Farm’s signature program, Embracing Horses is an extremely popular program in which children ages 5 through 18 learn to care for and ride horses. A skills-based program, children progress through a variety of levels of riding and horsemanship. The program includes opportunities for kids to ride once a week as well as opportunities for youngsters who are interested in becoming accomplished equestriennes and in competing at local, regional, or even national levels. Embracing Horses has a great track record for launching girls, especially, into science-related fields of study. Yearly, about 360 kids participate in the program.

A Celebration @ The Urban Farm 2009

The Urban Farm hosted the 2009 Celebration for all the hard work that the TUF kids did this past year! The parents got to ride, under the tutalege of their kids. Then we shared a meal under the trees and had dessert inside. Donna handed out gift certificates to each kid, and Donna received a gift certificate for all her hard work over the years. About 20 TUF kids plus their parents attended.

DU Students Volunteer at The Urban Farm

Thanks to the 30 first-year law students from the University of Denver, who came and worked hard weeding the Community Gardens at The Urban Farm–mucking stalls and painting the playhouse.  These students were unbelievable with their hard work, energy and good attitude. TUF gives these students an A+! Thanks for all their hard work!

ART FOR THE ANIMALS is a Fundraiser to be held Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Denver Urban Homesteading.  All proceeds will help feed the animals at The Urban Farm.

The Urban Farm is a 16-year old 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization providing direct programming for approximately 3,000 children a year to teach agricultural and environmental education to urban and at-risk youth and their families.  We do this by helping to create a sense of positive self-regard and self-reliance, a strong work ethic, and hope.  The underling value of The Urban Farm is that urban children will be exposed to the positive values of farm life-respect for the environment, appreciation for animals and plants, team spirit and the satisfaction of hard work leading to a job well done.  A side effect of The Urban Farm is that kids find a sense of belonging and independence, in short, a sense of community.

THIS WEEKEND: Need help with the Children’s Garden

Hello Urban Farm Community!

Welcome to springtime at the Farm.  This is such a great time of year to visit the adorable new farm animals—have you seen those cute new baby goats? We have some baby miniature Pygmys and Nubians!

2009 baby pigmy goats have arrived!
Miniature / Pygmy Goats at The Urban Farm

It’s also that time of year to jump in and help with the Children’s Garden!  We want to invite the entire Urban Farm Community to join us in preparing the beds and planting for this season’s delicious crop of veggies.  We are very excited to be able to participate in a Community Supported Agriculture (“CSA”) with Sense of Colorado, run by Master Gardener Debbie Dalrymple.

If you are interested in knowing more about the CSA, please read below at the end of this letter.  It’s a great opportunity to get fresh, crisp veggies grown close to home.

We are working in our Gardens over two weekends; The Big Kick-Off will be this Saturday, May 23 at 9:30 a.m.  We will spend the day preparing the beds.  We will work on Sunday and Monday (Memorial Day) as needed. The next weekend, May 30 and 31, we will be planting the veggies. Those days we will begin at 9:30 as well. We will be working all weekend on both weekends until the job is done, so if you cannot make it out in the morning, don’t despair!  We will have experts on hand to tell you what to do.

This is a great way to meet other Urban Farm families, and give back to the Farm for all the amazing things they do for our children.  So if you give an hour or two, or spend the day with us, come join us!

Please bring:
Sunscreen
A shovel if you have it
Gloves

Please let me know if you plan to attend, and which weekend (I want to plan for refreshments!) You can respond to this email or call me at 303-753-8846. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have.

Click here to contact Kim Downing, The Urban Farm volunteer.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share and in return receive a box of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season. The benefits of a CSA are:

  • The weekly box of fresh just picked veggies bursting with flavor grown close to home.
  • You connect with a community of people who celebrate eating well, living green, and reducing their carbon footprint.
  • There is Peace of mind, knowing you support local, organic farming that’s good for you and good for the Earth.
  • Your food dollar goes into the local economy.

If you are interested in receiving additional information about the Sense of Colorado CSA, please visit their website at http://senseofcolorado.com. There are a limited number of work-exchange shares available to Farm Families.
