Today is #GivingTuesday

November 27, 2018

We have two days for getting deals – Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On #GivingTuesday, we have a day for giving back.  #GivingTuesday is the opening day of the giving season.

Today Facebook and PayPal are matching donations up to $7 million. No fees on donations — 100% of your donation will go to TUF .

Why should you donate to The Urban Farm?

Have you ever seen a child’s face light up with pure joy when she first picks up a chicken?  Or discovers a warm egg in a nest?

We do.  Every day.  The children in our programs learn how to care for poultry, sheep, goats, cattle and horses.  They meet newborn animals and help in their care and growth. They groom horses, feed cattle and clean stalls.  They take prized chickens to county fairs.  They raise goats and sheep for show.  They help shear sheep for wool.
In short, we watch young faces light up all the time.  And, wow!  It feels great!
We like to say we’re teaching children our Five Character Strengths: Respect, Responsibility, Grit, Caring and Curiosity.  But, you know what happens?  Every time we watch a child’s face glow with pride, we do too.
Glowing, happy faces create more glow.  More pride.  More love.
When you donate to TUF you help to create these glowing, happy, loving faces.

We rely on funding from generous donors like you to make these opportunities a realty for so many of Denver’s youth.  If you cannot give through Facebook you can always donate through

Colorado Gives – Mile High Youth Corps + COMPASS

The Urban Farm, together with the Mile High Youth Corp Outreach Team, provided programming to elementary students of the Aurora summer and after school COMPASS program this year.  With the help of 5 to 6 MHYC leaders and their enthusiasm, we were able to reach 20 children in the COMPASS program each week.  This partnership allowed three different groups to learn together about the farm and about each other.

Mile High Youth Corp helped to teach the COMPASS children about our animals, and an accompanying activity or animal craft of the day helped to further the connections and learning that was occurring.  The experience helped both MHYC and COMPASS to learn about the farm with its different animals, how to handle the animals and care for them, and the different breeds and names of our four legged and feathered friends, ie. sheep, goats, cattle, ducks, chickens, rabbits, and horses.

Thank you for reading our wonderful, real-life stories of success at TUF. We appreciate your support, both financial and in-kind. Colorado Gives Day is December 4, but you don’t have to wait, you can schedule your donation NOW

Colorado Gives – Pecos “Bill” at TUF?

The Real Life Story of Pecos – Not a Tall Tale

Pecos Hollywood Jac, (a.k.a Pecos), arrived at Harmony Equine Rescue (part of the Denver Dumb Friends League.) He was struggling to find a forever home when Colorado State University learned of his potential as a wonderful horse to work with. CSU accepted him into their program called “The Right Horse Initiative” which helps find homes for rescued horses!

Pecos went through extensive training and was ready for his next career move. TUF found out about “The Right Horse Initiative” from the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA.)  CHA created a grant to help pair their members with wonderful horses. Thanks to #certifiedhorsemanshipassociation, Pecos was able to find The Urban Farm, where all of our instructors are CHA certified…….a wonderful partnership.  In June 2018 Pecos’ new home became TUF!

Pecos is a sweet, easy going horse and loves attention!  He has been a wonderful addition to our lesson program and is teaching students of all levels.

Pecos is an American Paint Horse and is 12 years old, but young at heart.

The horses’ winter coats are coming in which means that seasons are changing and that Colorado Gives Day is December 4The drought this year has caused a rise in hay prices and your donation can help feed and provide horses like Pecos with top quality care. You will also be supporting students who learn so much about our five character strengths through horses like Pecos!

Colorado Gives – Cows, Tractors, and Festivals…..Oh My!

From The Executive Director

Colorado Gives Day is coming as is the end of the tax year. This is a great opportunity to support your community through a tax-deductible donation to the Urban Farm. Please consider giving generously to help us deliver hands-on learning in a farm setting. But you don’t have to wait till Dec. 4 to donate, you can schedule your donation NOW

Our cows are also preparing for the change of seasons and their hair is growing shaggy. Maybe this is a sign of a long winter?
Here at TUF, we are hoping that it’s at least a wet one. We need the water as the drought has caused hay prices to double.  When you need 18 tons of hay every 50 days to feed animals, the difference between $210/ton and $410/ton is significant.  To address this jump in hay prices, we are actively looking for ways to obtain a tractor that can lift larger 800 to 2000-lb bales of hay daily.
In addition, we always need additional tools used for service learning like wheel barrows, rakes, mucking forks, pitch forks, and shovels. If you can provide us support, please let us know at Every little bit helps!

Finally, thank you to all the volunteers, members, partners, vendors, and attendees who braved the cold to be at FarmFest.  It was a chilly Sunday, but a great turn out and good time was had by all.  October has been a busy month. The Urban Farm was at Northfield, Eastbridge, Bluff Lake, and Rocky Mountain Arsenal for their October events.  With harvest activities behind us, we are now preparing the farm for the coming winter
