4-H Program, Projects & Membership
Boasting one of the largest 4-H clubs in the state, TUF makes it possible for city kids to participate in traditional livestock projects. More than 300 kids each year have the opportunity to work with horses, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits, chickens, turkeys, etc. in projects that heretofore were only possible for children whose families owned livestock and had a place to keep them. TUF is a national model for urban 4-H.

Embracing Horses
TUF’s signature program, Embracing Horses is an extremely popular program in which children ages 5 through 18 learn to care for and ride horses. A skills-based program, children progress through a variety of levels of riding and horsemanship. The program includes opportunities for kids to ride once a week as well as opportunities for youngsters who are interested in becoming accomplished equestriennes and in competing at local, regional, or even national levels. Embracing Horses has a great track record for launching girls, especially, into science-related fields of study. Yearly, about 360 kids participate in the program.

Summer Workshops For Young Children
Miss Piggle Wiggle the pig invites kids to spend a week of mornings at The Urban Farm learning about farm animals and growing tasty
and healthy things to eat. Farm kids will enjoy a hands-on experience that incorporates the work of the farm with learning about the many
contributions that livestock make to our everyday lives – from what we eat to what we wear. Participants will learn first-hand about sheep,
goats, chickens, turkeys, horses, donkeys, and pigs. The Farm’s learning gardens will provide children with ample opportunity to get dirty
and wet while tending the fruits, vegetables, and flowers. They will even learn how to make homemade jam and pickles. Week-long workshop is for 7 - 10 year olds, held 9:00 am – noon Monday thru Friday, usually held in June.
A farm experience designed especially for young children between the ages of four and six, Storybook Farm introduces youngsters to the
excitement of farm animals and plants through engaging books. Each morning begins with a story – Going To A Horse Farm, Hedgie’s
Surprise, Three Billy Goats Gruff, etc. From there, the children proceed to the farmyard where literature is transformed into real life. For
example, having read about children visiting a horse farm, participants will actually groom miniature horses and maybe give them a bubble
bath, go for a horse ride on a big horse, wield a muck rake, feed the horses, and climb on the hay bales. Guaranteed to be a delightful
way for young children to learn about farming. Week-long workship is for
4 – 6 year olds, 9:00 am – noon, Monday thru Friday, usually held in June.
Kids will enjoy this sunset to sunrise experience at TUF. Activities will include helping with the evening feeding and putting the animals to
bed. Campers will listen to the coyotes, roast marshmallows around a campfire, tell “scary stories” and sleep out under the stars. Kids will
have an early morning riding experience and finish off the experience by helping with the morning feed. Bring your own sleeping bag and
insect repellent – we provide everything else. Dinner, s’mores, and breakfast included. Registration limited to 10 children. Sleepover is for 8 – 11 year olds, usually held in mid July.
All participants in summer workshops are required to be members of The Urban Farm. Family memberships are $35 per year
(membership year is January 1 – December 31.)

Programs for Schools
Each year, hundreds of school children participate in programs at The Urban Farm. School participation can range from one fieldtrip to an in-depth year-long study consisting of monthly or weekly visits to The Urban Farm. Teachers can choose from among several Farm programs or can work with TUF instructors to customize a hands-on learning experience that complements the classroom curriculum. Following are brief descriptions of program options for schools:
Fieldtrips provide students a glimpse of farm life. Typically, TUF fieldtrips are one hour in length and include a tour of The Farm. Students will be able to touch several of the animals (e.g. rabbits, chickens, goats, horses). Many teachers make two trips to TUF during the year to emphasize seasonal differences in animals and crops. Service learning projects are considered fieldtrips.
Target Grades: Pre-K – High School
Cost: $5.00 per student
Variation: A Fieldtrip Plus option is available that includes a horse ride.
The cost is $10 per student.
The science partnership spans nine months (36 weeks) and is a standards-based, comprehensive study of the intricate relationships among the environment, plants, animals, and humans. Students attend school at The Farm one full day per week and TUF instructors visit the classroom monthly. TUF’s master teacher works with school staff to develop a customized program to meet the curricula needs of the participating school. Curriculum encompasses biology, life science, earth science, zoology, physical science, etc. Students are immersed in scientific method and work on a project basis. Culminating experiences may include a science fair.
Target Grades: 6th – 8th; 9th – 12th
Cost: $2,550 per 9 week quarter (up to 25 students)
Storybook Farm is an early literacy program for young children and encompasses the program year. Each month students visit TUF where they hear a farm story and then participate in a real-life experience with the farm animals and in the garden. Visits are 1 ½ – 2 hours in length. After each visit, the teacher receives a copy of the book that was read and a packet of follow-up activities to be used in the classroom between visits.
Target Grades: Pre-K – 3rd
Cost: $800 per year for up to 25 students

Farm Field Trips
TUF provides a standard field trip experience, a field trip plus experience (includes a pony ride), and a customized field trip experience. The standard field trip includes an hour tour of The Farm where visitors meet all the farm animals and, depending on the season, taste their way through the garden. During the tour, the kids will be able to pet chickens, goats, sheep, horses, cows, etc. They may help collect the eggs, may be asked to help roundup the baby goats.
Customized field trips are available as well. TUF staff will work with teachers, leaders of youth group organizations, etc. to develop a field trip that will emphasize specific content or experiences. For example, TUF has provided customized field trips to complement school curriculum on topics such as pioneers in early Colorado and natural selection versus breeding for specific genetic characteristics. We have also provided experiences to help Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts achieve certain badges (e.g. Horsemanship and fiber arts).

Education Partner at National Western Stock Show (NWSS)
TUF is an educational partner to the National Western Stock Show. Each weekday morning during Stock Show, staff and children from The Urban Farm (TUF) put on a show in the Beef Palace featuring livestock. Students in 4 – 6th grade from schools around the state participate in a multi-media interactive presentation about farm animals. In 2007, TUF hosted a game show “Fabulous Farm Animals – Fact or Fiction?” in which school teams were selected from the audience to compete on behalf of their class. The winning team at the end of the show won a field trip for 30 of their classmates to visit all the farm animals at TUF. An expert panel comprised of youth from our 4H program provided the correct answers. Animals from TUF provided “special effects” and an opportunity for the audience to have a hands-on opportunity after the show.
